The Teide peak, at 3,715 metres high, is the highest peak in Spain.
Teide
Due to health problems we cannot do the 0-4.000, so we decide to start from an altitude of 2.000 metres, sleep in the area set up next to the Altavista refuge (closed) and watch the sunrise the next day.
Important information. To sleep in the Park you must request permission beforehand on the Natural Parks reservation page. There are 4 bivouac areas inside the park, the one corresponding to the Altavista hut consists of a room in the unguarded part of the hut with 6 bunk beds. There is no water anywhere along the route except at the top station of the cable car, which is only accessible during the hours when it is open, from 9 am to 5 pm. Area known as La Rambleta.
It is also compulsory to get a permit to do the trail nº 10 Telesforo Bravo, which takes you to the summit of Teide and starts from the upper cable car station.
Both the overnight stay permit and the trail permit are free as long as you apply for them through the Park's official website and we advise you to do so months in advance as places are limited.
Teide
How to get there
The El Portillo visitor centre is located on the TF21 road. There is a car park with several places where you can leave your car, but remember not to leave anything of value in sight as there are numerous thefts in the different car parks in the Park.

Description day 1
We start our route from the El Portillo visitor centre at an altitude of 2,000 metres. We take the number 1 path from the back of the centre.
The views of Teide from El Portillo are brutal. On a clear day you can see this impressive volcano from any point on the island.
Teide
The path no. 1 of La Fortaleza runs along a plateau with sparse vegetation where a lot of largartos and lizards live. In one kilometre we join trail number 6.
Tip: Don't start the hike in the middle of the day, it is better to start it from 5 p.m. onwards, when the sun is getting lower and lower. The later you start, the less water you will need and the less weight you will carry.
A good acclimatisation is fundamental, you must climb slowly and hydrate yourself to avoid altitude sickness, as we are going up to almost 4,000 metres.
We link up with path no. 6 of Montaña de los Tomillos which takes us to path no. 7 of Montaña Blanca where path no. 22 of Lomo Hurtado also joins, if you are coming from the beach.
Teide National Park
On path no. 7 we can see some enormous rocks known as the eggs of Teide. Pyroclasts that the volcano expelled in its last eruption. Here the stone is whiter than in the lava flows.
Before continuing up Lomo Tieso, we take a short break while the helicopter and several rescue workers come to the aid of a girl who has suffered a sprain.
Altavista hut
We see many people with inadequate footwear and clothing for the altitude and the state of the terrain, which despite being simple paths has loose stones.
The Lomo Tieso is a part of path no. 7 that zigzags up to the Altavista hut where we spend the night.
The unguarded refuge is great and we enjoy an unforgettable sunset.
