Portugal day 14: Peniche.

Submitted by maria on Tue, 22/09/2020 - 19:57

Today we would like to tour the coast north of Peniche, a perfect surfing village if you wish to visit the Berlengas Islands reserve, an option that we rejected due to the weather.

Foz de Arelho

First stop Foz do Arelho. The beach of Foz do Arelho is situated at the mouth of the Óbidos Lagoon. Several kilometres of beach and good waves. It has a very large car park.

Opposite in the cliff area is Bom Sucesso beach. It offers spectacular views of Foz do Arelho and the lagoon and although it is smaller than the previous one we found it beautiful. Spectacular waves. You can walk up to the lighthouse.

The beaches that continue the coastline all the way to Peniche are cliffs and open sea, any of them is a perfect choice for taking pictures, bathing or strolling.

We stop for a beer at the Lavrador do Vale restaurant, which looks great for lunch.

We continue to Peniche, stop at Baleal beach, a beautiful cliffy beach with hundreds of surfers ready with their boards.

Peniche is a fishing town situated on a promontory surrounded by the ocean. Highlights include the 16th century fortress (used as a political prison in the 1950s), the harbour and Cape Carvoeiro, at the tip of which there is a lighthouse with spectacular views of the Berlenga Islands and the rock formations which, due to wind and water erosion, look incredible.

We eat in the harbour at the Miramar restaurant a delicious grilled cod and octopus with potatoes and onions.

We spent the afternoon at Praia do Medao, known as Supertubos beach, south of Peniche, where tubular waves of up to three metres can form.

The weather is not suitable for swimming so we decide to go for a walk. The sea is rough and we find several jellyfish in the sand.

This area is famous not only for surfing, but also for scuba diving and kite surfing.

It is typical in this area to eat land snails cooked without seasoning.

We return to Vau, after a walk to get to know the town, which is divided into two main quarters. We had a beer in the Café Petiscos Rosinha, a very curious old tavern. If you have the chance, take a look. We chatted with the locals.
