Colombia day 17: Cocora Valley.

Submitted by maria on Mon, 24/09/2018 - 21:49

The Valley of Cocora awaits us. Located in the lower part of the National Park of Los Nevados, it is nestled between majestic peaks, and a part of our route of 15 kilometers, runs through a canyon with hanging bridges over the river. You have the option of reaching the Acaime Natural Reserve, where you can enjoy the flight of the hummingbirds while having a bowl of chocolate with cheese or a red wine for the price of the ticket.

Jeeps leave from Salento's square and go out when they are full. There are tourists and we don't have to wait more than 10 minutes. It doesn't take more than 25 minutes. The road is almost all the time paved and in good condition.

It is a circular route, the whole route about 15 km with about 600 meters of unevenness. We started and although we had been warned we passed the blue gates. Luckily, a Spanish couple in front of us noticed it and warned us. We went through the blue gates because we wanted to start in the river area to enjoy the wax palms at the end of the journey.

We went up to the Acaime Natural Reserve and then to the Granja, where we enjoyed another snack. The climb up to the Granja is the steepest and most slippery area. Once you get there the path to the wax palms is quite wide and easy. The views are incredible.

After dinner we go to play Tejo, it is a very popular game in Colombia that combines lead, beer and gunpowder. It's a lot of fun, totally recommended, especially if you can practice it in an official court, although seeing the professionals is a luxury.
