Argentina day 17: Iguazu Falls.

Submitted by maria on Tue, 08/03/2011 - 20:06

Today we visit the Iguazu Falls from the Brazilian side. For this we take a public bus, very close to the hostel. We are about fifteen kilometers from the border with Brazil. We stop at the border and get off the bus, pass a checkpoint and are asked for our passport in which they stamp a permit for one day.

We arrive in Foz de Iguazu, a typical Brazilian town with red brick houses. We stop at the entrance of the Brazilian park in the visitor centre. Here you have the option to see the waterfalls by helicopter or enter the park directly. We didn't take the helicopter partly because we were running out of time and partly because of ecological awareness.

The entrance fee can be paid in Brazilian reals, Argentinean pesos or US dollars. There are several trails to choose from, we go directly to the one that runs parallel to the Cascades.

The views are breathtaking. It is a sunny day and you can see the rainbow. The best view is on this side although to experience it you have to visit the Argentinean side.

The trail continues to the majestic Floriano waterfall, where you go down to the bones, there is a platform from which you can see the Devil's Throat.

In Porto Canoas there is an elevator that takes you up to a platform with good views.

We return by bus from the park, our flight back to Buenos Aires leaves at 4 pm and we have to go back to the hostel to get our backpacks.

San Telmo is the neighborhood of antique shops, the most bohemian and is very central.

We go out for dinner to a nearby restaurant, roast and salad. We notice that there is a security guard on the terrace. At the hostel we are told that at night we have to be careful both in San Telmo and in the neighborhood of La Boca.
